DA Blog Post 1: My Current Career as a Digital Content Creator

This post is the second in a three-part series that will inform the creation of my 5-year career plan in digital media marketing. To learn more about this project, please go here.

Futurology theorists such as Wendell Bell (1998) explain that futurists determine possible futures through evaluating the past and present. Through this project, I am attempting to encompass the role of a futurist to develop an informed future career plan that considers the possible future trajectories of my chosen industry, digital media marketing. For this blog post, I, therefore, thought it was important to offer an evaluation of my current career within the industry and the ways I am preparing for my future. This post will offer explorations of my current practices, including my role at Seller Central Setup, my small business and my university degree (with a subsequent TikTok page that is part of my current DA).

Seller Central Setup – Content Creator and Administrator

I have been working at the digital agency Seller Central Setup for around 3 years as a digital content creator and administrator. In preparation for my future career path of being a digital media marketer, once I graduated high school, I recognised the need to begin working in the industry as soon as possible in order to gain the most possible experience. Since working at SCS, I have worked with countless clients offering the following services:

  • IGC Video Creator – Produced unboxing and demonstration videos of client’s products for them to use on their website and social media
  • Product model – Taking lifestyle photos of me with client’s products for them to use on their product listing page
  • Listing Infographic Designer – Design listing infographics for clients to use on their product listing page
  • TikTok Account Manager – Setup and manage client’s TikTok pages by regularly posting content on the pages created by me. Here are some accounts that I am currently working on:

These roles at SCS have ultimately made me very skilled in content creation; however, content creation is only one aspect of a career in the digital marketing field. My work as SCS has thereby made my experience very specialised, with internships having turned me down, not because of a lack of experience but because my work experience was too narrow.

Keep It Sweet – (tiny and currently inactive) Small Business

Last year, I decided to get a logo for my Instagram page and a WordPress website designed by fellow BCM student Busy Issy (@itsbussyissy on ig check her out). I did this in hopes of using these platforms to promote my services and ultimately gain more clients in content creation. For a while, I posted old videos I had made for past clients on the Instagram account, but the Instagram account became inactive due to uni life taking over. Similarly, the website created by Issy was designed and given to me, but I have not touched it since. Evidently, this is a pattern in which I become super motivated to further my career during the university break, but when the semester starts back up, my plans ultimately sit on the back burner. From this, at the start of this year, I identified my goals for 2022:

  1. Graduate my Communications and Media (major – marketing) (minor – digital and social media) with a High Distinction average
  2. Try to obtain the ‘uni experience’ after having spent the first two years doing online learning
  3. Continue working at SCS for an income stream

So ultimately, my small business has not been the priority for this year – as the university experience has kept me QUITE busy…

University Degree – Communications and Media (with the explanation of my TikTok presence)

I am in my third and final year of my communications and media degree, which allows students each semester to focus on a project that they can use to develop their professional portfolio. These projects are called ‘Digital Artefacts’, with this series of blog posts being a part of my BCM325 Future Studies DA.

The second facet of this Digital Artefact is running the UOWDMS TikTok page, which I have been doing throughout this semester. This page has offered me further practical experience outside of my SCS job, demonstrating my engagement with the university while being able to provide utility to the viewers of the UOWDMS page by offering advice in the videos and comment section.

UOWDMS TikTok DA Breakdown

I have made the UOWDMS TikTok page a part of my BCM325 DA as it has acted as:

  • A portfolio to demonstrate how I am actively engaging with my future career path in the present through managing a TikTok account and creating content that engages with industry-specific topics such as career advice and university
  • A way to offer social utility to viewers through offering DMS related advice through my videos, in which further advice was provided by responding to comments made on the videos
  • A public platform I could consistently engage with throughout the semester that could undergo iteration and receive feedback

Here are some examples of the content I have posted on the TikTok page:

By analysing patterns within the past and present of my career, I can look towards the future in studying the future of digital media marketing and my subsequent role within it. This blog post offers important context that will be needed for blog post 2, which will examine the future of my marketing career and blog post 3, which will be forming my 5 year career plan.

Thanks for reading, and remember to Keep it Sweet!
